Ricky Bates

Dr. Rick Bates is an Associate Professor of Horticulture at Penn State University and holds a B.S. and M.S. in Horticulture from West Virginia University, and a Ph.D. in Horticulture from Virginia Tech.  Since arriving at Penn State in 2000, his research has focused on developing innovative approaches to plant production systems and development of plant varieties exhibiting improved pest resistance and adaptability.  He is active in assisting clients in less developed nations establish successful income-generating horticultural enterprises and sustainable food production systems.  These activities have led to a variety of projects in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and the Republic of Georgia.
