Program Evaluation Workshop for Agricultural Extension Professionals in Nepal

Dr. Murari Suvedi, Professor at Michigan State University, served as a team member of MEAS Scoping Mission of Nepal’s Pluralistic Agricultural Extension System in December 2011. The purpose of the scoping mission was to identify key issues within the pluralistic extension system in Nepal that will need to be addressed to develop a sustainable, farmer-led, and market-driven system of extension and advisory services. The report summarizes the findings based on literature review, personal interviews, observations, and feedback from seminar presentations followed by discussion. The scoping mission team has recommended specific actions for consideration by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives for possible future funding by USAID. In the course of the Scoping Study in Nepal, Dr. Suvedi offered a day-long workshop (see Agenda in Appendix A) to agricultural extension professionals working under the Department of Agriculture, Nepal. The workshop introduced participants on what, why, and how of program evaluation and offered general guidelines on planning and implementing evaluation of agricultural extension programs. Participants received information about the goal of MEAS/USAID project and its activities. They also received a pen-drive with MEAS resources. The workshop was co-sponsored by Nepal’s Department of Agriculture and was organized in the auditorium of the Department of Agriculture.
